Washington Life Magazine Article on My Production Company, 8112 Studios

5 11 2009

8112-sidebar-WEB

Washington Life Magazine just debuted their creative issue (November 2009) in which my production company, 8112 Studios, was featured.

YOUNG GUNS: Don’t let their youthful gazes fool you, and no, they aren’t actors, they ply trade their behind the lens. The fast-rising film and television production team of 8112 Studios is led by American University grad Nicholas Cambata and nationally-renown photographer Doug Sonders, and they already have a resume most LA shops would die for – they just filmed Lady Gaga, won an MTV VMA for best dance video, filmed 3 Doors Down on tour, and went to Miami to hang from helicopters and film high speed boats for Geico … all before you had your morning coffee. Between their global gallivanting and growing client list, these young guns are firing on all cylinders.

Life-Size Posters for Nike’s House of Hoops in Washington DC

2 11 2009

TTHORTON_BANNER

These posters were used in the opening of the new Washington D.C. location of House of Hoops, which is a new Nike / Footlocker collaborative store . It is essentially an “all things basketball” Nike store.

I took portraits of 2 of DC’s most talented high school basketball players for these shots. Tyler and Ronika were amazing and warm young people to work with. “The House of Hoops also honored two local HS standouts: Gonzaga’s Tyler Thornton and Howard D. Woodson’s Ronika Ransford, as well as coach Steven Turner from Gonzaga”

My TIME Magazine shoot of Ken Feinberg

2 11 2009
DSp-Time_KenF_Spread

A couple of weeks ago TIME Magazine hired me to do a shoot with pay czar Ken Feinberg (this guy) for their November 9, 2009 issue.

So I brought two assistants and only had about 25 minutes of setup time and a total of 20 minutes to do a photoshoot with 3 different setups within Mr. Feinberg’s office near Capitol Hill. Mr. Feinberg was extremely nice to work with, he was just a very busy guy considering he was on the front page of the Wall Street Journal the same day of our shoot.

I feel like you get to certain point in your career where you obviously want to take good photos, but you also have to be able to do it in 10 minutes or less. I remember when I was starting out, I was terrified that if I didnt have a few hours for a shoot, I wouldnt be able to get the shots I needed. As you progress, you really need to learn to accomplish things in shorter amounts of time. Become more confident with your equipment and yourself and always keep a shot list goal on the top of your mind. I say “goal” because you often cannot get the shots you want, but always aim high.

Seether – “Careless Whisper” Music Video

21 10 2009
My photo of Seether for their new single

My photo of Seether for their new single

As some of you may recall, I photographed Seether for their promo material, as well as the cover of their hit single “Careless Whisper,” which is a rock and roll retake of the George Michael hit 80’s song.  I just had a chance to check out their music video for the song, which released this past summer.

Their video is made to look like some of the best Nintendo and Atari games from my 80’s childhood. I love what they did! My favorite part is when Shaun, the lead singer, becomes Teen Wolf and car surfs on top of the A-Team van as Mr. T drives followed by the George Michael / California Raisins dance party.

Enjoy!

Got tied up with some deadlines, but finally had a chance to put together a little fun video from our road trip. Hope you like it! Will probably add more clips in a day or 2.

Chevy High Performance Magazine – Magazine Cover

I never thought I would come to a place in my career that I would be shooting so much that I would forget when I had magazine cover come out, but it has happened!

Came across this cover I shot of a sweet modified Chevy Nova for Chevy High Performance Magazine earlier this year and the cover came out Summer of 2009. What a nice surprise!

Playing with my new iPhone 3Gs and Winston Churchill the Boxer

8 10 2009

As some of you may have seen in my recent roadtrip photos, I had an…incident… with my iPhone 3G. I decided to bite the bullet and pay the money for the upgraded 3Gs. I have really been enjoying the upgraded camera and the video function. Enjoy the antics of my furry partner in crime, Winston, playing in my backyard as I test the video mode out.

The Ghostbusters Truck hood ornament has collected bugs after 3k miles

Just made it to Orlando after 6 days on the road. Whew are we beat, but the cars made it! We did have a few small mechanical issues along the way (flat tire, broken fanbelt, electrical fire), but nothing we couldn’t handle.

Got to see some great sights and landmarks, but the best part was the people we met along the way. Cannot wait to share the stories.

Here are some photos and highlights from the last few days. Look for the big post with more photos and videos next week!

Enjoy a time lapse Daniel took from his DeLorean using his Canon G9 as we drove through Moab, Utah.

The Great American Geektrip (My American Roadtrip in a DeLorean & a Ghostbusters Truck) – Update 2

30 09 2009

_MG_5855

Greetings from a cool and beautiful Vail, Colorado (it is very empty here in the offseason)! We drove from Bluff, Utah, through incredible Moab, Utah to here today. Remember I will have a full detailed post next week, but here are some photographic highlights from the past 24 hours.

The cars are holding up well, aside from some occasional funny noises and idle  issues in the high altitudes of Colorado. It has been a blast so far! Make sure to spread the word about this road trip and the blog posts.

The Great American Geektrip (My American Roadtrip in a DeLorean & a Ghostbusters Truck) – Update 1

29 09 2009

dsp_MG_5903

Greetings from Bluff, Utah everyone. I am sitting here in the Desert Rose Inn having a chance to update the blog for the first time considering I haven’t had any reliable web access, let alone cell service for days.  I am on my second amazing day of the Great American Geektrip (<== see link for more info on the route and cars).

I had originally planned to do full daily updates from Sunday (leaving Los Angeles) to Friday (when we arrive in Orlando, Florida) BUT I realized we are  logging a lot of miles and stopping for many photo and video opportunities and I wouldn’t have enough time to edit and post all of the great images and share the funny stories and also sleep. Thus, I will be doing several smaller updates throughout the week and one BIG update next week FULL of video footage, photos, and fun recaps of various Geeky adventures.

About Fashion Fights Poverty (from their website):

Created by Style & Image Network in 2005, Fashion Fights Poverty (FFP) is, according to the Washington Post and Biz Bash magazines, “one of the largest fashion fundraisers in Washington, DC” and is a tax-exempt charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service code. Featuring national and international designers who employ ethical means and practices in their design and manufacturing processes to produce products that promote economic development and the betterment of a given community, FFP provides a forum for dialogue and awareness-building about how fashion, textiles, and design can alleviate poverty and empower communities.

Fashion Fights Poverty is about two things: one, it rewards and recognizes designers and organizations who embrace the powerful potential of creativity and design to address issues of poverty by adhering to such principles as fair trade, equitable compensation and the use of environmentally-sustainable materials.

Two, Fashion Fights Poverty is about responsible consumerism and providing equally attractive marketing and branding platforms (such as the “Dress Responsibly” lookbook) between ethical designers and the growing population of socially-conscious shoppers. By focusing on both producer and consumer, FFP hopes to extend the dialogue and participation in poverty eradication beyond think tanks and policy makers to include manufacturers and consumers alike.

FFP is about action and promoting positive behavior. We are not telling people to stop shopping. Rather, we are showing opportunities to do so responsibly and, in the process, engage organizations and enterprises which use fashion, design and creativity as a means of addressing the most important issues of our time.

Canon Loyalty Program – Return Your Old Broken [Qualifying] Camera & Get A Discounted Replacement

22 09 2009

logo

I just read about Canon’s Loyalty Program. Essentially, if your qualifying digital Canon camera (see list below) dies/breaks, you can call in to Canon and they will give you a refurbished replacement at a reasonable discounted cost.  This is pretty handy considering my Canon G9 decided to go to sleep and never wake up last week. Hope this helps some folks out!

See below for instructions and details.

canon_g9_3q

Information below from Fatwallet.com:

Customer Loyalty Program’s direct number is 866-443-8002, option 2 for digital camera upgrades.

Also see excerpt of Canon Order Confirmation at the bottom of this summary.

In-stock orders cannot be modified or canceled! That said, here are the four easy steps:

1) Specify that you have a broken Canon XYZ camera and would like to know what the loyalty upgrade options are. They will try to transfer you to a technician, but you can tell them you just want to know the prices first and the rep can give them to you.

2) Once you are ready, call again. This time, you will get transfered to a technician, who will ask you to desribe the issues. They would verify that 1) it’s broken* and 2) it’s out of warranty (just say you’ve had it for a over a year). Then, he would ask for the broken camera’s serial number, your name, phone, address and email.

(*TIP: if you specify water damage, e.g., it won’t turn on after it got wet, they will accept it as broken for sure)

3) The technician will give you the prices as well, then transfer you back to the loyalty program rep, who will take your name, phone, address again as well as your credit card. You will get the order number.

Shipping options:
$10 2-business days
$20 1-business day

Plus state sales tax where applicable

4) Canon will ship you the replacement camera with Fedex signature required, along with a prepaid Fedex label and a box for you to ship your broken camera to them. You must ship it to them within 10 business days to avoid unreturned product fee. You only need to ship the camera body, so you can keep all accesories (batteries, charger, straps, etc.).

The Great American Geektrip – Vegas to Orlando in a Turbocharged DeLorean & a Ghostbusters Truck

18 09 2009

epicroadtrip

Starting September 27, 2009 I will be driving with friends from Las Vegas, Nevada to Orlando, Florida in a turbocharged DeLorean & a custom Ghostbusters Truck.  We will spread the trip over 5 days, stopping at key American landmarks.

This is the roadtrip I always wanted to take as a kid! I will be posting daily roadtrip blogs with many photos and video clips (barring any technical difficulties).

The Ghostbusters Truck started life as a 2006 Chevy Silverado, but was modified with functioning lights, siren, and Ghostbusters graphics. It also happens to be autographed by Dan Akroyd.

Stay tuned for more details!

UPDATE: My buddy Ben Moody of the band We Are The Fallen informed us we should change the name of the trip to the “Great American Geektrip” from “The Great American Nerdtrip.” He is right, this is more of a geeky endeavor.

Crashed Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in NYC (no pun intended)

16 09 2009

So my production company, 8112 Studios, got the call last week to go up to New York for Fashion week, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz. Of course, we jumped at the opportunity, as we had never been before and heard it was a fun time.

We would be filming a WLTV pod for one of our favorite clients, Washington Life Magazine.

This Fall would be previewing the Spring 2010 line up, so with one of our trustworthy Sony EX-1, a backpack, a couple of extra batteries, and a small bogen light, we set off into fashion world.

Overall, it was a great experience, but after going, I don’t know if I’d ever want to go as merely a member of the public. Having the media pass made all the difference, as otherwise it would be hours of standing in line, standing at the shows, and more standing to get out.

Check out the video we shot for Washington Life. Keep in mind, that they wanted it to be quick, and essentially with little dialogue (no interviews), making the video more of a weekend montage summing up the best parts.

My retoucher, Justin, and I worked hard on this project and it has all come together nicely! This project is the perfect example of a photographer and a retoucher working together from the beginning to deliver a finished product to an advertising client.

21 08 2009

dsp24389615

I had an awesome shoot with the Mission Motors team (the company building “The World’s Fastest Production Electric Motorcycle”) out in San Francisco, California. Got lots of great photos from the all-day shoot (and a nice sunburn too). Can’t wait to share the results. In the meantime, a little teaser…

Justin Paguia, my retoucher, and I have some big plans for these shots. Just you wait kids! :)

Another Photo Shoot with DJ I-Dee – Trying Something New

10 08 2009

idee4

Did a quick shoot with my friend DJ I-Dee, who was visiting town from Miami, at my home.  Here are several of my favorites from the session.  He said he wanted a shoot with vibrant colors. I decided to break out the gels I keep in my lighting case, but rarely use. I think the shots are cool, but look a lot different from my regular work. Although, I believe it is always important to “shake it up” when it comes to your photography style. Try something new!

Idee2

In photoshop, I used a “hard pass” duplicate layer set to 50% opacity to create more vibrancy in the photos.

“Strobist” Flash Accessory Kit – Turn Your Hotshoe Flash Into A Mini Studio

GGDCA007800_01_L

For those of you who like shooting with flashes, but don’t have  the cash to purchase off camera lights (or maybe you just like shooting “strobist” style with hotshoe flashes), here is an excellent alternative. This kit is like a mini-studio for your hotshoe flash.

For around $200 you can own all of the following (or you can opt for a smaller more affordable kit):

  • Professional Flash Set – Soft Diffuser + Honey Comb + Conical Snoot + Barndoor + Mini Reflector + Globe Diffuser
  • Soft Diffuser with 6 color Mask
  • Honey Comb
  • Conical Snoot
  • Barndoor
  • Mini Reflector
  • Globe Diffuser

Anyone have an experience shooting with this kit? Would love to hear from you.

You can learn more and order this product HERE.

I’m Back! Updates!

Recent shoot with DJ Cedric Gervais in Miami

Recent shoot with DJ Cedric Gervais in Miami

It has been a wild summer so far (well, it is mostly over now). I still get anxious when September approaches as if I expect school to start again. Do I have my summer reading done?!

Ive driven some armored vehicles, got a personal tour of Jay Leno’s garage (amazing), had dinner with some of the Back to the Future cast, been finishing up my new site www.unicornproject.tv (which I will post about soon), did a road trip up the California coast, hung out with the Sugar Ray boys when they rolled through the east coast, did a photoshoot with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in NYC, and even hit Comicon for a day or two (saw the Avatar premiere, amazing!). What a summer!

I have been promising a new blog for awhile and now the day has come to say… its almost here! You can check out a preview HERE. There are some bugs still and you will see some changes, but it is coming together! I decided to self-host my blog off of my photography website server and go with a custom design. It’s just hard doing the changeover. Thanks to Bobby Saini for help with setting up the new blog.

I have many photos and videos to share with you. I have been all over working on some amazing and fun projects. Apologies for the lack of updates, but I am back on top of it!

Check out some of my random iPhone photos from the past month or so:

Driving an 8+ ton armored troop transport… :)

12 07 2009

Just had an awesome shoot with Lenco, maker of some of the world’s best armored trucks. I will make sure to show you guys the finished photos when they are complete, but in the meantime, enjoy this teaser. This is me driving a huge armored truck with a battering ram on the front.

I love my career. Especially when I get a chance to drive such cool toys!

Nothing like intense video and photo shoots across the country (3 different states) over the span of 1 week to get the frequent flyer miles going. Expect some cool video and photos this week. RIP Billy Mays, Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, and Ed Mcmahon.
